Am I wrong? / Roommates

Am I wrong that my roommate’s boyfriend basically lives here?

He showers here, works from our couch, and wears my robe. He has never paid a single bill.

Please Settle This,

When I answered Jess’s ad for a roommate, it said "quiet, clean, no drama." Two out of three, and I am about to lose my mind over the third.

Jess is great. Honestly. She labels her leftovers, she replaces the toilet paper before it runs out, she remembered my birthday. For six months, living with her was the best roommate situation of my life.

Then she met Tyler.

Tyler is also nice. That is the problem. It is so hard to be mad at a man who says "good morning" every single morning, in MY kitchen, wearing MY robe. (Long story. It was on the hook. He "thought it was Jess’s.")

At first he stayed over on weekends. Then Thursdays. Now I count five, sometimes six nights a week. He showers at 7 am, right when I need to get ready. He works from our living room on Mondays and takes calls on speaker. We had to upgrade the wifi. The electric bill is up $38. I know, because I checked it three times.

Last week I came home and he was rearranging our pantry. "More efficient," he said. Jess laughed. I went to my room and stared at the ceiling.

So I brought it up, as nicely as I have ever said anything in my life. Maybe Tyler could chip in on utilities, since he is here most of the week? Jess went cold. "He is my guest. You have people over too." My cousin stayed one weekend. ONE.

Now it is awkward. She eats in her room. Tyler still says good morning. I still do not have my robe back.

Am I wrong for wanting him to pay? Or am I the roommate who made it weird?

Who was right?

Why Paying for Three has a point

Five nights a week means more hot water, more power, more wifi, and less of the home she pays for. Asking for a share is about the bills, not about Tyler.

Why Jess has a point

She hears criticism of someone she loves. She keeps the place clean and fair, and a guest rule feels like her roommate policing her relationship.
